MUSIC VIDEOS - Think Creatively!

If you are considering producing a music video then think about all the creative ideas that go into making an effective video. You could make use of the green screen in various ways to create movement, change settings and also fragment time and space. Here are some examples of genuinally creative music videos:

When analysing music videos consider the following:
  • How direct is the relationship between sound and image?
  • Are the lyrics supported by the imagery?
  • Is the narrative clear to follow - do you have multiple narratives?
  • How convincing is the lip-syncing?
  • Are the shots appropriate to the genre?
  • How is the editing used - what pace does the video adopt?
  • How important are stars to the video - make a link here with the ancillary products.
  • Is the video organised around a concept or theme?
  • What kind of identity is being created by the artist/band?

Evidence of planning - maintaining a production blog

Your blog will become a place for all your ideas and the development of your planning as an online scrapbook. It will also allow us to track your progress with the coursework and you can submit the blog as evidence of planning.

What can I include in my production blog? Here are some ideas:
  • Links to videos that influence you from YouTube
  • Any Photos that give you ideas
  • Take recce shots on location and post them
  • Post pictures of props, costumes, instruments, etc.
  • Look at relevant real examples of either Soap TV trailers or Music Promos; analyse in terms of conventions
  • An animatic of your storyboard - this is where your film each of your drawings and then capture your shots in the edit program before adding the music.
  • Shooting Schedules
  • Shooting Script
  • Treatments
  • Final Storyboards

Sample trailer deconstruction: Hollyoaks

·         Non- diegetic soundtrack creates “Thought Beats” – music matches edits. Song is contemporary therefore soap is for a teenage audience

·         Multiple storyline “snippets” in quick succession

·         Lots of lights on stars face. Unlike other soaps, light comes from sharp points to create interesting shapes and shadows for the viewer. This has become a convention of the soap, like the “grey” lighting in Eastenders.

·         Murderer is anomaly. He’s older than the rest of cast, and in a different place. Camera is at low angle to make him look threatening.

·         Two sources of light in some scenes to create shadows

·         12 SECONDS: Static camera with character walking into MCU creates movement with a static camera

·         Pan up

·         Zoom

·         Deep focus

·         Asymmetrical framing

·         Faces of main characters are fully lit so audience know to concentrate on their emotions

·         13 SECONDS MCU with pull focus to character in background. Pull focus matches movement of character in foreground, linking main character and background character

·         Short shots- generally 2-3 seconds each

·         Choppy editing to create interest

·         POV reverse shots

·         Shot reverse shot

·         Side on shot

·         “Texas” and “Dodger” (great names!) standing very close together-positioning lets audience know about their relationship

·         Leaning to draw audience in

·         Day, time, brand, twitter on tittle card at end

Creating Brand Identity in Soap Opera

As Soap Operas run continuously, in the same scheduled slot, on the same institution for years, they become ingrained in the psyche of a culture. The Eastenders opening title cards, with it's combination of image, sound and text, is one of the most distinctive opening sequences in Soap.

When you create your trailer the name of your soap must tell the reader who the soap is aimed at, what is going to happen in the programme and where it is set- both region and main settings.
